Frequently asked questions
What is a Bankleitzahl (BLZ)?
A Bankleitzahl (BLZ) is an 8-digit code that identifies a bank in Germany. Together with your account number it forms your IBAN, and each BLZ maps to a BIC/SWIFT code for international transfers.
How do I find my BLZ and BIC?
Search your bank above, or enter your BLZ. You can also read the BLZ from older bank documents — though for transfers Germany now uses the IBAN, which already contains the BLZ.
Is the BLZ still used?
Within Germany the IBAN has replaced the BLZ for transfers, but the BLZ still identifies the bank (it is the first 8 digits of the German IBAN) and maps to the BIC.
Where does this data come from?
From the official Deutsche Bundesbank bank sort code (Bankleitzahlen) file, updated quarterly.
