A GPS speedometer for boats
A GPS speedometer for boats that shows your speed over the ground in knots by default, and also in km/h or mph. The dial is scaled to 60 knots to suit most leisure and motor boats, and it logs your top and average speed. A simple GPS speed log for boating and sailing. Everything runs on your device; nothing is uploaded.
How Boat Speedometer works
Knots and speed over ground
One knot is one nautical mile per hour, which is exactly 1.852 km/h. GPS gives you speed over ground (SOG) — your true speed relative to the seabed — which differs from speed through the water when there is a current or tide. For navigation, SOG is usually what you want.
Tips on the water
- Keep the phone where it has a clear view of the sky.
- Start tracking before you set off and allow location access.
- Protect the phone from spray; a waterproof case helps.
Want distance run? Use the GPS odometer (it shows distance in km or miles).
