Background Remover

Background Remover — a fast, free, privacy-friendly online tool that runs entirely in your browser.

A subject on a clear background works best · processed in your browser
Drop an image to start. The first run downloads an AI model (a few MB), so give it a moment — after that it is quick. Everything runs locally; your photo is never uploaded.

About the background remover

This tool removes the background from a photo automatically, leaving a clean transparent cutout you can download as a PNG. It runs an AI segmentation model directly in your browser — your image is never uploaded to a server — so it is private and free. It works well on people, products, pets and objects with a clear subject.

How Background Remover works

How to use it

  1. Drop or choose a photo.
  2. Wait a few seconds while the model loads and processes it the first time.
  3. Download the transparent PNG, or place it on a new background.

How it works

A neural network looks at every pixel and predicts whether it belongs to the foreground subject or the background. The background pixels are made transparent. Because everything happens locally in your browser using WebAssembly and your GPU where available, no data leaves your device.

Tips for the best cutout

Good lighting and a clear difference between the subject and the background give the cleanest edges. Busy or low-contrast backgrounds, fine hair and glass can be harder. For product shots, a plain background works best.

Frequently asked questions

Is the background removal free?
Yes — it is completely free with no sign-up or watermark.
Are my photos uploaded?
No — the AI model runs in your browser, so your image never leaves your device.
Why is it slow the first time?
The model has to download and initialise once; after that it is much faster.
What format do I get back?
A PNG with a transparent background, which you can place on any colour.
Does it work on hair and fur?
It does a good job, though very fine strands can be tricky on busy backgrounds.
Can I add a new background?
Yes — drop the transparent PNG onto a coloured canvas or use a photo editor.
What images work best?
Photos with a clear subject and good contrast against the background.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, though large images take longer on lower-powered devices.
