Rules for reading Roman numerals

Add letters from largest to smallest (e.g. XVI = 10 + 5 + 1 = 16). When a smaller letter comes before a larger one, subtract it (IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, CM = 900). A letter is never repeated more than three times in a row.
